Improving your parenting skills

As parents, there’s one thing that, when you admit it, will make things easier on you: we don’t know everything. We don’t know how to deal with the myriad of things that can get thrown at us by our children.

When your kid is first born, you do the research, and think you know everything about how to be a parent. Then the kid is born, and BOOM! Something happens that wasn’t in the books, or in the blogs, or in your passdown from other parents. You’re thrown for a loop, and have no idea what to do. So you do some more research, and you eventually go with your gut. You become an expert and dealing with your baby.

Just when you think you’ve got it down, that baby becomes a toddler. You go from being an expert, to being lost in the woods again. You go back to the web, back to the blogs, and try to figure it all out again.

What if there was an easier way? In our area, we’ve found one. It’s a program of Families First Seacoast We have a great center in the next town that offers free parenting classes (with free childcare and a free meal for kids from birth through age 12). Every Tuesday, we go take a break, learn something, and the kids get to spend time with kids their age in a safe setting. They also offer a “Parent Recharge” on Thursday mornings, aimed at the stay at home parent (and lead by a SAHD). It’s a less structured version of the parenting classes, with a goal of time off to recharge your batteries.

I strongly recommend that you see if there’s something near you. There are great, highly trained people who want to share their knowledge with you, to help you improve your parenting skills. It’s also a great way for you to pass your knowledge on to others who are in the same boat, or who are coming up behind you and pulling their hair out.
